COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
KEITLES, STEAM JACKETED (STAINLESS STEEL), GAS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to RR-K-193.
1. ABSTRACT
1.1 Abstract. This commercial item description covers stainless steel, steam-jacketed, gas kettles in the following sizes:
Size 1- 20 gallon capacity
Size 2- 40 gallon capacity
Size 3- 60 gallon capacity
Size 4- 80 gallon capacity
1.2 CID based part identification number (PIN). A document based PIN to identify sizes of items is included in section 5. This identification number procedure is for Government purposes and does not constitute a requirement for the contractor except as information on “Government unique” data nameplates (see 5.4).
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Design and construction. The kettles, including the outer casings, shall be fabricated from 300 series stainless steel. The inner body shall be fabricated of a single piece of 18.8 type 304 or 316 stainless steel, as specified (see 5.2). The interior and exterior of the kettle shall have a number 4 sanitary finish as referenced in ASTM A240. The complete assembled unit shall be provided with all piping fittings, valves, controls, gauges, and thermostats for connection to gas, electric, and water supplies. The kettles shall be gas fired by natural or propane gas, as specified (see 5.2) and shall operate at a temperature range of 150°F to not less than 250°F by means of steam generated in self-contained generator. The kettles shall be thermostatically operated at a steam pressure between 5 and 15 psig.
